Can Auckland port relieve the pressure of supply chain in America ?

Recently, due to the tension of the global supply chain, the two major ports in the United States have experienced serious congestion. The backlog of containers has exacerbated the supply chain crisis in the United States.

 

In order to alleviate the serious congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and long beach, port operators announced a surcharge on imported containers stranded at the port.

This measure is likely to intensify the contradiction between ports and shipping companies.

 

Unlike the continuous congestion of these two ports, Auckland port, another large container port in the United States, has not been affected.

 

Therefore, the port calls on shipping companies to transport more goods to Auckland port to alleviate the pressure of the supply chain.

 

Bryan Brandes, maritime director of the port, said that our port is not congested and we are ready for more business.

 

According to the latest statistics of Auckland port, the container freight volume of Auckland port has increased by 4.2% this year.

 

Moreover, there has been no container backlog in the port since August. And now there is still a lot of space at the dock to handle goods.

 

In September this year, a total of 54 ships docked at Auckland port. This is the lowest number of ships docked since 2015.

 

Meanwhile, compared with the same period in 2020, the import freight volume in September decreased by 13% and the export freight volume decreased by 18%.

 

Brandes said that the port's ship calls and cargo volume should pick up in October and November.

 

"If the capacity of Auckland port can be utilized, it can alleviate the current US supply chain crisis and promote economic development," he added.

 

The CEO of a shipping logistics enterprise said that the shipping companies ignored the cargo handling capacity of Auckland port and only focused on Los Angeles port and Long Beach port.

 

He analyzed that the two ports are too important. Even if the waiting time is long, the shipping company will not jump from the port. Therefore, the shipping company does not want to take the time to transfer the goods to Auckland port.

 

According to the latest news, a trans Pacific route of one will resume connecting with Auckland port in November.
