Los Angeles Port imports fell again in October

As global trade demand continues to weaken, the import volume of Los Angeles Port continues to decline.

On the other hand, as imported goods continued to shift from the west coast to the container ports along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico, the port's throughput in October also fell again.

According to the report, the total throughput of Los Angeles Port in October was 678429TEU, down 25% year on year. Among them, the import volume was 336307TEU, a year-on-year decrease of 28%, 14% lower than that before the epidemic (October 2019).

This is the lowest import volume in October since the global financial crisis in 2009 and the lowest monthly import volume since May 2020.

On the positive side, the sharp monthly decline of Los Angeles Port in September has slowed down.

The import of the port in September decreased by 15% compared with that in August, while the import in October only decreased by 2% compared with that in September, i.e. 7155TEU.

Seroka, the executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, said that the shipping company cancelled 20 voyages in October, canceling about 25% of its normal services.

In fact, the decline in imports from Los Angeles Port is also reflected in the nearby Long Beach Port, which has a much larger monthly decline than Los Angeles Port, highlighting the pressure faced by the ports on the west coast.

According to the report of Long Beach Port, the import volume of the port in October fell 23.7% year on year to 293924TEU, the lowest level since April 2020.

The import volume in October decreased by 48747TEU, or 14%, compared with that in September, and the monthly decline was much greater than that of Los Angeles Port.

The import situation of ports along the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico is in sharp contrast with that of ports on the west coast, and the import volume of these ports is still close to the historical peak.

GPA said that Savannah Port handled 552800TEU of container cargo in October, up 9.6% year on year. This is the second highest throughput month of the port since records began, second only to 575500TEU in August this year.
