During the epidemic, two major ports on the west coast of the United States handled most of the local container cargo. Congestion is more frequent.

Now, however, with the gradual decline of shipping costs, the import volume of Los Angeles Port is also gradually decreasing.

As the largest container port in the United States, the Port of Los Angeles is running counter to the general trend of American ports. The overall container import of the United States is still close to the historical high, but the import volume of LA Port in August fell by double-digit year-on-year.

The Port of Los Angeles reported on Thursday that its total throughput in August was 805672 TEU, down 15.5% year on year. The import volume is 404313TEU, the export volume is 100484TEU, and the empty container volume is 300875TEU.

Among them, imports fell sharply, down 16.8% year on year, down 16.7% compared with July.

This is the lowest month since December last year when the total import of Los Angeles Port was restrained due to serious land side congestion. This is also the lowest import volume of Los Angeles Port in August since 2014.

However, the sharp drop in imports of Los Angeles Port in August does not represent the overall trend of US imports. According to the data of Descartes, the overall container import of the United States in August was basically the same as that in July, down 1.8% year on year.

The overall import of the United States increased by 18% compared with August 2019, and the import volume of Los Angeles Port in August decreased by 8% compared with August 2019.

The performance of the Port of Los Angeles is in sharp contrast to the data released by the Port of Savannah. The import volume of Savannah Port in August was 290915TEU, with a year-on-year growth of 20%, which is the highest in the history of the port.

Seroka said: "The goods that usually arrive in August and are related to the autumn and winter seasons have arrived. In order to ensure the delivery time, it is expected that the owners with a longer delivery time will ship in advance."

"Compared with the traditional on time delivery, this" just in case "strategy is already very common in the market."

The strong data of Savannah Port highlighted that another reason for the weak data of Los Angeles Port in August was that the goods of Los Angeles Port were transferred to the east coast and the Gulf Coast, while the imports of ports on the west coast declined.

Another reason for the decline in imports from Los Angeles Port in August was the local competition from the neighboring port Long Beach Port. A large number of goods were transferred from Los Angeles Port to Long Beach Port.

This led to the transfer of about 40000 TEU containers from Los Angeles Port to Long Beach Port in August, which is equivalent to about half of the month on month decrease in imports in August.

Seroka said that the transfer to Long Beach Port this month may be higher, with 60000 to 80000 TEUs. He insisted that this change would be temporary and that "the situation between Los Angeles Port and Long Beach Port will soon return to normal".
