Cargo accumulation has always been one of the biggest problems for port operators. The use rate of ports has been declining due to the accumulation of mountains of container goods. Now a port has made a major move.

In order to free up the space of the dock yard and the containers that have occupied the yard space for a long time, the Chittagong Customs recently began to destroy some of the goods in containers.

It is understood that the customs authorities of Chittagong Port destroyed 63 containers of goods last Thursday, and another 382 containers of goods have been destroyed since September 11.

These containers were transported into the port from 2004 to 2018, but the importer did not pick up the goods.

At present, there are 7500 TEU containers that can be auctioned in the port yard. The importer has not picked up the goods in time or applied for extension, but it has occupied the yard space for a long time. According to port statistics, 273 containers contain dangerous goods.

The Chief of Chittagong Customs, Mahfuz Alam, confirmed that the destruction operation started last Sunday in an open space near the dumping station of Chittagong City Corporation.

Mahfuz Alam said: "We hope to destroy 25 to 30 containers every day. The destruction will continue until September 26."

According to the port information, the destroyed goods include oranges, coriander, grapes, bulk cereals, salt, garlic, sunflower seed oil, coffee and other perishable/biodegradable (biodegradable) products.

According to customs officials, the destroyed containers have been removed from the port, freeing up storage space. He said that the destruction of the unsold items was an ongoing action.

Officials said the destruction process would take nearly a month. According to the Port Law of the country, the importer needs to pick up the goods within 30 days after the container is unloaded.

If they do not take delivery or ask for an extension, the port authority may send the containers to the auction house and ask the customs officer to sell the goods by auction.

When asked why these containers were stored in the auction house for a long time, an official of Chittagong Port Authority said that the customs department had no place to destroy the goods.

Every time we take action to destroy the goods, we need the help of Chittagong City Company to find a place.

In addition, according to the official, some importers filed a lawsuit with the court to prevent their goods from being auctioned or destroyed.

GLA hereby reminds the cargo owners and freight forwarders that if you have goods to be shipped to Chittagong Port, Bangladesh, you need to inform your customers to pick up the container goods as soon as possible to avoid losses caused by destruction.
