The strike situation at European ports remains grim. As early as the end of August this year, the British trade union implemented the strike action. This action has a serious impact on the supply chain.

After the strike, it will take weeks to clear the backlog of goods. In addition, the unloading space of a full container arriving ship may be severely reduced.

Now, the trade union and the port operator have had another negotiation, but it ended in failure. The trade union announced that it would hold another strike from September 27 to October 5, lasting for eight days.

This coincided with the strike at Liverpool port, another large port in the UK. Under this double blow, Britain's supply chain will be severely damaged.

The head of the trade union said that this was caused by the port operators themselves. It said that the operator did not seek to solve the problem through negotiation, but tried to add a salary agreement.

Some freight forwarders said that they should keep calm about the current situation, and we need to solve how to maintain our cargo transportation.

"Our customers seem to be quite tolerant and understanding of this. We are not as worried as expected - we brought out all the containers during the last strike."

As the UK is currently in the post Brexit stage, taking similar measures may make the country become a regional route.

Because the inflation rate in January 2023 is expected to be as high as 19%, the longer the strike, the more the port will lose. Experts believe that ports should consider not only workers, but also the whole industry.

Many shipping companies have begun to inform customers about the emergency of the strike in Liverpool, mainly based on the diversion through other ports in the UK.

However, the strike at Felixto Port again raised concerns that DP World London Gateway and Southampton Port may be overwhelmed.

The end of next week will be the time for Liverpool to strike, but now the aftermath of the eight day strike in Felixstowe port has not been completely cleared.

Once the strike time of the two ports overlaps, the interruption of the British supply chain may worsen, and even affect the whole Europe.

Now many European ports are affected by the strike action. GLA hereby reminds the freight forwarders that if you need to ship to the UK or Europe, you should contact the shipping company in time to avoid delay in delivery.
