Recently, due to the serious accumulation of goods at LA / LB port on the west coast of the United States, many shippers chose NY / NJ port on the east coast as another option.

At present, the import volume of LA port in July has not decreased. However, Gene Seroka, CEO of the port, said that the import volume in August may begin to decline.

Seroka reported last week that the port of Los Angeles handled 935345teu containers last month, which was the highest import volume in July since the port recorded.

As one of the busiest ports in the United States, the port of Los Angeles has been the first container port in the United States for 22 consecutive years. In 2021, the port of Los Angeles handled a total of 10.7 million containers, setting the busiest record in 115 years.

The cargo volume of Los Angeles port this year keeps pace with the record year of 2021, and has reached 6.35 million TEUs so far.

The import volume increased by 3.5% year-on-year to 485472 TEUs, and a total of 103497 TEUs of export goods were handled, an increase of 13.5% over July 2021.

Seroka said that orders from Chinese factories are slowing down and many retailers still have sufficient inventory. Therefore, the volume of imported goods will be reduced this year, and the same products will not be purchased again.

On the other hand, the mobility of the port is also improving. At present, the number of containers transported by trucks with a waiting time of more than 9 days has been reduced by about 2000, and the time spent in the port is only 4 days.

Meanwhile, the number of container ships waiting at sea has dropped to a very low level. According to the data of the Southern California ocean exchange, there are 15 container ships queued in LA / LB port, down from 109 in January.

Now, the situation has reversed. Marine traffic ship location data shows that the number of queued ships on the east coast and the Gulf Coast is higher than that on the west coast.

As of last Wednesday afternoon, there were 33 container ships near Savannah port, 23 near Houston port and 19 near NY / NJ port.

In order to alleviate the congestion of other ports, seroka appealed to those cargo owners who need to re plan their routes to go to the port of Los Angeles, and said that the port of Los Angeles has capacity and can provide assistance.

Thanks to the efforts of all parties, its supply chain crisis has been greatly improved. While enjoying the record setting, Los Angeles port has not only cleared the backlog, but also increased its imports. Now it is their turn to help other congested ports.

LB port, adjacent to La port, released the data of July on August 9. The total throughput of the port last month was 785845TEU, which was the best July on record.
