The import container volume of Savannah port in the United States surged, and GPA plans to expand the capacity of the port

The massive accumulation of containers has become a major problem for American ports. According to McCown's data, the import volume of the top ten ports in the United States in June increased by 5.9% year-on-year, reaching 2.165 million TEUs.

At present,there is no obvious sign of easing the congestion in the ports of the United States, and the congestion has shifted eastward.

The freight volume of New York / New Zealand port and Savannah port is increasing continuously, resulting in a year-on-year increase of 9.7% in the import volume of major ports near the east coast. Imports from the West Coast increased by 2.3% year on year.

According to the ship position data of maritime traffic and the latest ship queuing list. As of the morning of August 10, 140 container ships had been waiting for berthing near North American ports.

Container cargo volume of Savannah port surges

The Georgia Port Authority (GPA) recently announced that the port of Savannah handled 530800 TEUs in July, an increase of 18% compared with the same month in 2021.

Since January, the processing capacity of GPA has reached 3.4 million TEUs, an increase of 231400 TEUs or 7% compared with the same period in 2021.

In order to handle as many containers as possible in the shortest time, GPA has advanced the operation time by two hours. It is open continuously from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. (local time).

In the past week between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., truck drivers at the port completed 3000 transports.

Lynch pointed out that Savannah's container business is growing to meet the growing needs of existing and future customers.

GPA ordered 8 new ship to shore cranes. The first 4 cranes will arrive in February and the next 4 cranes will arrive at the end of 2023.

In addition, another large-scale ship berth at the garden city wharf has been completed by 60% and is planned to be improved and will be put on line in July 2023.

The improved berth will increase the berth capacity of 1.4 million TEUs, while the west project of garden city wharf will increase the container yard capacity of 1 million TEUs in phases between 2023 and 2024.

The Georgia Port Authority will increase the berth capacity from 6 million TEUs to 7.5 million TEUs next year and to 9 million TEUs by 2025.

GPA plans to spend $4.5 billion over the next 12 years to expand its container handling capacity.
