Some time ago, strikes occurred in several European ports. As a result, the operation of large ports such as Hamburg Port and Rotterdam port was interrupted.

However, strikes also exist in Asia now.

It is understood that truck drivers in the Indian port will go on strike on July 4. This makes cargo owners, freight forwarders and shipping companies face serious freight delays.

Industry insiders said that since Monday, trucks handling cargo at container terminals in Ennore port and kattupalli port in India have stopped transportation.

The truck drivers' Association is urging a substantial increase in transportation costs. It said that at present, the cost of fuel prices is rising, and it is reasonable to increase the cost.

A truck driver from the container terminal Association said, "we have asked to increase the current freight rate by 80%, but we have not received a positive response from the container terminal operators."

At present, truck drivers require 6120 rupees (77 US dollars) for 20 foot containers and 12240 rupees (155 US dollars) for 40 foot containers.

However, according to the container terminal operator, the truck cost of Chennai port has been higher than that of other ports, especially Nhava Sheva port.

According to them, the transportation cost of a 20 foot container local /cfs in navasiwa port is about 2500 rupees (US $32), while it needs 3400 rupees (US $43) in Chennai port.

According to insiders, the strike has led to an increase in imported containers, and some export goods failed to be loaded on scheduled ships.

Due to the limitation of dock space, export goods are usually transported to the container terminal outside the dock before entering the dock and loading onto the ship. Similarly, imported goods are sent by the consignee or its agent to the container freight station for customs clearance.

An agent of a shipping company in Chennai port said that the truck driver strike had affected the cargo handling work of ships berthing at the three ports, and pointed out that if the strike was not cancelled as soon as possible, the impact would be aggravated.

The agent added: "if both parties cannot quickly find a solution to the impasse, many time bound containers may miss the scheduled shipping date and lead to the accumulation of imported containers on the dock."

Direct shipping services in southern India are limited, so most of the import and export goods on the east coast of India are traditionally transshipped through Colombo port in Sri Lanka.

Now, after the interruption of truck transportation, major shipping companies are increasingly looking for an alternative port to Colombo port. Due to the economic / political crisis faced by Sri Lanka, even this transit mode is facing more and more challenges.

GLA hereby reminds the majority of shippers and freight forwarders that if you want to transship goods through Indian ports, please pay attention to the latest port information in time and contact the shipping company to avoid delays in the delivery of goods.
