From next year, Chittagong will force shippers to use electronic payment

Recently, Bangladesh issued an important notice: Bangladesh has enforced the use of electronic payment of customs duties related to import and export trade through Chittagong customs (CHC).

CHC stated in this notice that manual payment will not be accepted from January 1, 2022. He added that if electronic payment is not made, importers and exporters will be responsible for the delayed delivery of goods.

Earlier, from July 1, Chittagong imposed electronic payment when the payment value exceeded 2500 US dollars. In this way, port operators can provide customers with faster services.

It is understood that this method is mainly carried out by customs clearance agents and freight forwarders on behalf of the owner. Electronic payment systems are also designed to help prevent tax evasion by port customers.

The port official said that the government is trying to provide better services for customers in Bangladesh through digital payment.

The Chittagong Port Authority recently proposed to force the submission of delivery notes electronically as part of the digitization of various services.

From December 1, the port authority requires the following six freight forwarders to submit delivery orders online: APL Bangladesh, Maersk Bangladesh, Continental traders BD Ltd, Continental traders, Ocean International Ltd and Mediterranean Shipping Bangladesh limited.

In the past, in the absence of an electronic bill of lading system, customs clearance agents and freight forwarders could only pick up the bill of lading from the shipping company in person in order to pick up the imported goods.
